The 2016 Chianti Classico is 95% Sangiovese and 5% Merlot. The is an easy-drinking red wine with a clean and direct personality. The mouthfeel is compact and hollow, although the bouquet is nicely endowed with wild berry, spice and earthy aromas.

Sangiovese is blended with a tiny part Merlot (just 5%) to produce the no-fuss 2014 Chianti Classico. This is a bright and easy-going Tuscan red with lean consistency and a watery finish. It imparts cherry, blueberry and grilled herb along the way. Bright acidity seals the deal.

The 2010 Chianti Classico is juicy, fleshy and delicious. Succulent red cherries, licorice, tobacco and leather are some of the notes that flow from this rich, deep Chianti Classico. This is a terrific effort from Rocca delle Macie, and a great value as well. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016. This is a solid set of wines from Rocca delle Macie, an estate that has been inconsistent over the last few years. The arrival of consulting oenologist Lorenzo Landi is another positive sign that Rocca delle Macie is serious about improving quality. I am very curious to see where things go from here.
