The 1990 Barbera d'Alba Vignasse is a knock-out example of this underrated and generally overlooked varietal. It exhibits a dense purple color, a big, rich, ripe nose of black fruits, stunning concentration and extract, full body, enough crisp acidity to give focus and vibrance to the wine's flavors, and a long finish. Voerzio's flamboyant 1990 Barbera d'Alba-Vignasse could easily compete with the terrific Barberas produced by Elio Altare. Almost opaque dark ruby/purple in color, the wine reveals a huge smoky, oaky, richly fruity nose, gobs of lusty, voluptuous fruit, and a long, spicy, rich finish. There is good acidity, as well as wonderful sweetness and length that suggest this wine should continue to drink beautifully for 5-10 years.
