I tasted this wine beside $100 Napa Cabs, and while it obviously wasn’t in the same league, it held up well. The fruit is ripe and flattering, suggesting blackberries and cherries enriched with oak, and the tannins are rich and smooth, with sharp acids. Imported by the Trincheros, of Sutter Home, from Australia’s highest cool-climate growing region. This winery produces a Merlot and Shiraz that are also great values.——S.H.(11/15/2004)—— 85

There is some varietal character in this dark, dry red wine, notably the black currant taste. But it’s thin in body, and marred by overripe notes of raisins and prunes. High acidity only adds to the impression of austerity and hardness in the mouth. ——S.H.(12/15/2002)—— 83
