The 2007 GRANDE RESERVA “QUINTA DO ALEM TANHA” from the winery’s Alem Tanha vineyards (the Quinta and the family name Nunes de Matos is featured more prominently on the labels, while Avidagos is on the back label), is a blend of Tinta Amarela, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional, Tinto Cao and Sousao. Powerful and burly, coming in at 15.5% alcohol, it has a hard, crisp edge and some astringency on opening, together with heavy, sweet, oak-related aromatics of vanilla. It has better depth than the Reserva, reviewed this issue, but if that wine seems a little bit too marked by oak at this point, this takes it one step further, and has a high toned demeanor as well, with a touch of nail polish on the nose and palate. It mostly handles the alcohol well, but I had some concern over what would happen when the fruit thins, as there may not be enough mid-palate concentration to soak up the tannin or oak. This is obviously an effort by the winery to do something a little different and special, and it is certainly more ageworthy and complex than their other offerings reviewed this issue. It is not necessarily more charming. Try it again around 2012 or 2013. Drink 2011-2020.This winery as yet has no importer in the USA. Its winemaker is Rui Cunha.
