The 2008 Real de Aragon Garnacha Centenaria was produced from vines over 80 years of age and spent 12 months in seasoned American oak. Brooding black fruits, cigar box, leather, and lavender compose the expressive nose of this opulent, layered, full-flavored Garnacha. Give it 1-2 years to fully bloom and drink it through 2018. The 2007 Real de Aragon Garnacha Centenaria contains 5% of the nearly extinct indigenous variety Miguel de Arco. It was aged for 16 months in seasoned American oak before bottling without filtration. A glass-coating opaque purple, it reveals aromas of cedar, underbrush, cigar box, and black cherry. On the palate it sports layered fruit, lots of spice notes, excellent depth, and a lengthy finish. Rusty in color, with initial aromas of smoke, dried leaves, herbs, tobacco and subtle berry. That all indicates that it’s not overdone, and thus the tobacco, earth and dried fruit flavors are par for the course.
