The 2011 Rocaplana is a pure Syrah aged in 300-liter barrels, 90% French and 10% American, for eight months, with a nose redolent of a northern Rhone from Crozes-Hermitage with notes of smoked bacon, violets, blueberries and tar. The wood is neatly folded into the wine, and the palate has ripe, juicy tannins, a silky texture and moderate acidity. If it was a little bit livelier in the palate it would be outstanding. A great Syrah, hardly identifiable as Penedes, but who cares when this is a real bargain. 9,000 bottles produced. Drink now-2018.
Oriol Rosell is a small family winery created in 1984 around their 80 hectares of vineyards. They produce both Cava and still Penedes wines. 350,000 bottles are produced annually. As you can see they are quite committed to the white Xarello grape.
