I hesitate in reporting on the 2004 Fruhroter Veltliner because there are only a couple of hundred liters of it. Not bottled every year, this exotic is a barely off-dry wine from 40-year-old Malvasia vines. Intense, Malvasia-typical aromas of lavender, pennyroyal, mint, and lime lead to a glossy, satisfyingly full-bodied yet brightly high in acid, lavender and mint flavored palate. The finish is long, pungent and palate-saturating. While not terribly complex, this Altoid of a wine is compellingly intense and will have shock value as well as interesting applications at table.
