The least expensive wines from the Marques de Grinon, the Durius offerings, include a 1994 Sauvignon Blanc and a 1992 Tinto. Both are well-made wines from the Valladoib region. The 1992 Durius Tinto, a blend composed primarily of Grenache, is an outstanding bargain. Although not complex, the wine is rich and mouthfilling, with a Cotes du Rhone-like, peppery, spicy, black-cherry-scented nose, excellent, pure, rich, chewy flavors, and plenty of glycerin, alcohol, and fruit. Drink it over the next 4-5 years. The Marques de Grinon is not content to rest on his laurels. Barrel samples of the 1994 Syrah suggest this is going to be a blockbuster Syrah that should make some of the Rhone Valley's top producers nervous. Approximately 4,000 cases will be made. The outstanding barrel samples were smoky and rich, with that wonderful bacon fat and cassis character. Readers should also be on the lookout for a new offering from the Marques de Grinon produced from a vineyard in the Ribera del Duero, not far from Pesquera. The 1994, which is being aged in new oak casks, was spectacular when tasted from barrel. It will be released in 1996.Importer: Kooka Winnes, Seattle, WA; tel. (800) 859-00689
