Hiedler’s 2004 Sauvignon Blanc Steinhaus was among several highly successful 2004 wines from this variety. Lovely aromas of yellow plum, grapefruit, nut oils and caraway suggest a ripe, top-class Sancerre. Grapefruit, lime zest, salt, honey and nut oil flavors abound in the mouth, indeed they leap and bound in an invigorating display. The finish is strikingly mouth-coating, yet stimulating in its reverberation of juicy citrus and salty, faintly ashen minerality. In an interesting role reversal, a bottle closed with a plastic stopper was somewhat shut-down in aroma as well as quite perturbing on the palate, and we went in search of a bottle finished with natural cork in order to get a proper exhibition of this wine’s virtues.
