The 2005 Chaos (50% Montepulciano, 50% Merlot) is elegant and refined in its layers of perfumed, vibrant dark red fruit. This harmonious wine needs another year or two in bottle for the oak to integrate, but it shows superb balance even at this early stage and has plenty of freshness to allow it to age gracefully for several years. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2017. Proprietor Antonio Terni bottled just a few of his wines in the tricky 2005 vintage. The 2004 Chaos is 50% Montepulciano, 25% Syrah and 25% Merlot aged in French oak. This sumptuous wine reveals gorgeous, perfumed aromatics and layers of vibrant, sweet fruit that open onto the palate with lovely detail and clarity. It shows terrific balance, particularly in the way the finessed tannins frame the fruit. It is the most complex and intriguing of these wines. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019. This small property located in the Marche has been owned by the Terni family since the late 1800s. Antonio Terni is a long-time fan of Bob Dylan, whose music has been the inspiration of many of the wines. The 2001 Chaos adds Cabernet and Merlot to the Montepulciano. A sustained, dark ruby color, its nose adds berry fruit to ripe plums and light oak spices, and the ample, supple tannins round off the solid, concentrated body.
