The 2015 Chianti Classico Riserva Squarcialupi offers an extra level of density and complexity compared to the estate's easy-drinking base Chianti Classico. You also get a clear sense of the vintage difference between the two wines (2015 versus 2016), with this wine offering more richness and soft plumpness. This wine also offers an elegantly compact bouquet with ripe flavors of black cherry and spice. There is a touch of sourness on the close. Some 20,000 bottles were made. The exact blend is 90% Sangiovese with smaller parts Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 2013 Chianti Classico Riserva Squarcialupi is 90% Sangiovese with 5% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. I am pleased with this latest release from La Castellina thanks to the richness of the fruit on hand and the dense layering at the back. The bouquet exhibits ripe tones of blackberry and red currant with spice and leather. The mouthfeel is smooth, rich and contemporary in appeal.

The 2008 Chianti Classico Riserva Squarcialupi (90% Sangiovese with tiny additions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot) is defined by the oak tones amassed over 24 months in barrel. Bright spice and tobacco lifts off the bouquet and is soon followed by black cherry, tar and a touch of black licorice.
