This 2019 Prodigy Shiraz is a remarkably sophisticated expression of Coonawarra Shiraz. While the region is best known for its terra rossa soil and powerful, age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignons, the Shirazes sometimes bask in the shade. Here, the (in majority) French oak maturation vessels (where the wine spent just over 18 months) dictate the future of the wine, charting the careful course through blood plum, raw cocoa, mulberries, lashings of crispy bacon fat and a slick of fresh maple. The tannins do not encase the wine so much as they permeate every corner of it, like a fine web. This is a joy and a pleasure to drink: wisps of flavor curl through the long finish, leaving little memories of the beauty that just was.
