Riesling was far more challenging for Schmid in 2006, as witness his very Sauvignon-like, lively but tart 2006 Riesling vom Urgestein Bergterrassen. Lemon, gooseberry, peppermint and oregano are matched by pungent herb, tart citrus, salt, and white pepper in an invigorating and persistent if relatively sharp finish. I would drink this young, as a Sauvignon substitute. While I did not have occasion yet to meet Josef Schmid, the samples that came my way were, to say the least, impressive. The 2006s canvassed below are no flukes: Schmid’s 2005s were also hugely successful, although for reasons of space and the context of this report, I have not published those notes.Importing, Unionville, PA; tel.
