Medium ruby-purple, the 2018 Syrah Kimsey Vineyard features aromas of cassis, tar, aniseed and earth. The medium-bodied palate is grainy and fresh, with baking spice-laced fruits lingering on the finish.

The 2016 Syrah Kimsey Vineyard is deep ruby-purple with scents of black plum, macerated blueberries, olive, cocoa, violets and lush black fruits with meaty hints slowly revealing themselves. Full-bodied, it floods the mouth with luscious dark fruits and tons of savory accents—first olive, then chocolate, then cedar—with very firm, slightly drying tannins, just enough freshness and a very long finish. Give this more time in bottle.

Another beauty is the 2013 Syrah Kimsey Vineyard, which shows a cool climate style in its white pepper, sappy, underbrush, flowers and liquid blackberry-laced bouquet. Medium-bodied, nicely concentrated and elegant, with lively acidity, it should evolve nicely for a year or two and keep through 2025.

I thought the 2013 was the first vintage here, so was surprised to see the 2012 Syrah Kimsey Vineyard in the lineup this year. Showing brilliantly, with gorgeous notes of black pepper, dark fruits, bouquet garni and lots of minerality, it's medium to full-bodied, balanced and exceedingly pure. Completely destemmed and aged 18 months in used French oak, it comes from the sandy soils in the Ballard Canyon and vines planted in 1997. It's a gorgeous Syrah to drink anytime over the coming decade.
