Immich's 2020 Riesling Detonation is deep, intense and flinty on the dark toned, initially reductive and still more yeasty than fruity nose that reveals crushed stone notes along with ripe yet discreet Riesling aromas. Round and refined on the crystalline palate, this is a full-bodied, intense and very elegant, calm-flowing yet structured dry Riesling with long, intense and juicy fruit and fine salinity on the finish. This is an excellent Mosel Riesling sourced in the Dhroner Hofberg, Briedeler Herzchen, Sennheimer Lay, Enkirchener Steffensberg and Monteneubel. Aged in stainless steel, this is the only single-vineyard wine from Immich-Batterieberg sold for less than 20 euros ex-cellars. It is also the finest and most complex Detonation I have tasted so far. 11.5% alcohol. Screw cap. Tasted soon after the bottling in September 2021.

The 2018 Riesling Detonation is deep, elegant and spicy on the fine yet intense nose. Round and juicy on the palate, this is a very elegant, refined and salty Riesling that reminds me of Alsace. The finish is salty and piquant and reveals a very first hint of maturity, which makes this Riesling an excellent lunch wine even today. An assemblage of partly really old vines, bottled with 11.5% alcohol. Tasted from AP 15 19 in April 2020.

Assembling grapes from the Kinheimer Rosenberg, the Dhroner Hofberg and the Oberemmeler Altenberg in the Saar Valley, of which 50% are old, ungrafted vines, the 2017 Riesling Detonation opens with a clear, precise and aromatic Riesling bouquet of perfectly ripe and concentrated fruit aromas intermixed with a crystalline and flinty terroir note. Silky, lush and elegant on the palate, this is a very fine and lingeringly salty Riesling that reflects the old vines and low yields of the top vineyards where the grapes were sourced. This is already an excellent wine with remarkable finesse and persistency. The finish is beautifully crunchy and salty and highly stimulating. Dangerous wine! Tasted in March 2019.

It’s an intriguing idea to blend fruit from the Rhine and the Mosel, theoretically balancing the best qualities of each. Astute tasters will catch a little bit of that in this wine, with darker spice notes playing against brighter floral nuances. The result is a pleasant if rather generic Riesling that finishes with soft pear and melon fruit. ——J.C.(12/1/2006)—— 84
