The 2008 Tinto "Mariana," is fancifully named after an historical figure from the 17th century Spanish-Portuguese war. It is a blend of Aragonez, Trincadeira, Alfrocheiro and Alicante Bouschet. It is quite tasty and while on the lighter side, not at all thin. It is a bit short on the finish, but quite to my surprise, after opening flat and unassuming, it improved considerably with 30 minutes of air, developing a juicy and flavorful red fruit nuance and showing some ripe tannins. It was quite seductive and sexy. However, the Trincadeira (presumably) also seemed to raise its head at that point, and the wine developed a touch of funk, perhaps a vegetal note, which some will appreciate and others sure won't. For a bargain red, overall, though, it has more than a few moments, though. It is not now available in the USA, but is expected to be in the $10 range. Drink now-2016.
