The 2007 “Marias da Malhadinha” is a blend of Aragonez, Alicante Bouschet, Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in French oak. This is lavishly oaked and the strong oaky notes mark the wine all too well, obliterating the fruit flavor along the way. I held it for some 90 minutes more and finally got some relief. The wine itself is otherwise laid back, flat, with very ripe tannins. Although it shows no hints of decay (this is a current submission), it also shows little liveliness. There were 6,152 bottles produced, plus some large format items. Drink now-2017. This winery is currently searching for a new importer, but expect that to be resolved in the near term. Hopefully, prices will drop from prior levels – and their new, rather delicious late harvest wine will become available.
