Ms. Schrock served me a wine her father had made, the 1976 Muskat Ottonel Beerenauslese, which she described as a "lighter version of a Ruster Ausbruch." It was produced in an era when no one harvested grape by grape as they do today. It doesn't have the depth or concentration I've come to expect from this region's wines. That being said, its fresh clay and sweet cedar aromas, combined with delicate caramel, spice, and burnt candied orange peel flavors make this an excellent wine. It is light to medium-bodied, complex, and at its peak of maturity.
