The 2009 The Ridge Syrah from Robertson is aged mainly in French oak with 50% new barrels. It has a rather reticent bouquet that refuses to yield despite coaxing. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe tannins. There is plenty of spicy dark fruit laced with thyme, cumin and white pepper, although the finish is tight and rather conservative. This has a mature edge, with toasted anise and mulled spice notes melding into the core of crushed plum and blackberry fruit. A hint of fruitcake lingers on the lightly raisined finish.
