The 2001 Barolo Vigneto Roncaglie, from a vineyard in the Santa Maria zone of La Morra, opens with a nose of spices, vanilla and minerals. It is one of the more accessible Barolos right now, and comes across as soft on the palate, with flavors of very sweet cherry fruit, licorice and toasted oak, but lacks the depth of this producer’s best wines. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2015.
