The 2009 Grenache is the first crop from a young vineyard planted with the Tablas Creek clone. The wine was aged for 17 months in just 7% new French oak, the balance in neutral French puncheons. Dark ruby red in color, it offers up a pleasing perfume of cherries, tobacco, spice box, and lavender. Forward on the palate with a bit of underlying structure, this chewy, full-bodied effort is meant for drinking over the next 5-6 years. Gilbert Cellars is a family owned and operated winery that began in 2004. Last year’s collection was impressive and the new releases are a notable follow-up.Tel. (509) 249-9049; www.gilbertcellars.com
