The 2016 Bolgheri Rosso Mosaico (100% Merlot) is distinguished by the oak tones that play a prominent role. The wine ages in barrique for 12 months, of which 20% is new oak. There are thick layers of spice, leather and cured tobacco folded into dark fruit, plum and blackberry confit. The wine probably needs another year or so of bottle aging before it reaches a better balance. Production is 15,000 bottles strong.

The blend is Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. The 2015 Bolgheri Rosso Mosaico shows large-scale intensity and a velvety voluptuous feel that coats the palate from start to finish. The wine is bold, rich and thickly textured. Oak spice, cinnamon and nutmeg fill in the rear.

The 2013 Bolgheri Rosso Mosaico is 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Syrah aged in neutral oak for 12 months. That solid base of Merlot gives the wine its softness and its prominent cherry flavors. Of course, the other grapes used in the blend add spice, rosemary and grilled herb. This bold red wine is also distinguished by light shadings of smoke, tar and ash. The results are austere, firm and elegant. Drink this pretty wine over the next two to four years.

The 2012 Bolgheri Rosso Mosaico shows evolved notes of resin and tar on top of the dark fruit aromas that are presents at the outset. The bouquet is redolent of dried cherry, baking spice, cinnamon and crushed clove. The oak element leaves a very strong imprint. Mosaico is Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the 2011 Bolgheri Rosso Mosaico is a fat and chewy wine with a luscious core of dark fruit, prune and plum. A food-pairing suggestion might be pork with braised fennel or caramelized onions. There’s a point of sourness on the close that resembles bitter cherry or redcurrant.
