A pure expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2016 Bolgheri Superiore Maronea is a full-bodied Tuscan red with elongated and intense aromas of black fruit, spice, leather and tilled earth. The wine is voluptuous and generous yet also contained by a firm tannic frame. The wine ages in oak for 18 months, of which only 10% are new barrels. The results are beautiful and balanced. Some 10,000 bottles were made.

Although oak does play a very prominent role in this wine, the 2015 Bolgheri Superiore Maronea ultimately showcases the ripeness and fullness that is characteristic of the Tuscan coast. It shows dense richness and concentration at the back.

The 2013 Bolgheri Superiore Maronea is Cabernet Sauvignon enhanced with Cabernet Franc. This is a darkly layered and concentrated wine with full-body appeal. I must say, however, that it delivers a highly unique set of aromas that span from spearmint to garden mint to some oddly familiar exotic or medicinal herbs that I can't quite place. The second time I came back to the bouquet, I was reminded of toothpaste. It's an acquired taste I suppose but I can also imagine getting tired of it after a glass or two.

This wine was a Bolgheri Rosso until last year. The 2012 Bolgheri Superiore Maronea opens to a broad bouquet that shows dark fruit, spice and leather in pole position. This is a brawny and muscular expression with loads of smoke and barbecue intensity at the back. The wine's consistency is thick and densely concentrated. Maronea is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc.
