The 1999 Semillon Oom Pagel (meaning "Uncle Pagel," who was the foreman of the farm when Charles Back was a young man) is produced from 100% Semillon, and was fermented and aged in oak. It reveals smoky oak aromas and a medium-bodied character filled with coconut, vanilla, and pear flavors. This wine has admirable concentration and depth of fruit, yet is too marked by wood to merit a higher score. Drink it over the next 3 or 4 years.
