In a bottle with clean graphics and a pretty dark blue label, the 2018 Cortona Syrah Cuculaia reveals a very savory side with spice, smoked bacon, mahogany and cola. These aromas arrive in parallel with ripe blackberry and baked plum. This is a rich, full-bodied red wine to pair with a hearty meat dish.

This is a dazzling and beautiful wine. The Fabrizio Dionisio 2016 Cortona Syrah Cuculaia is richly concentrated and softly layered. Cuculaia emphasizes softness, darkness and textural fiber. Black fruit and plum segue to tobacco, leather and campfire ash. The spirit of the wine is modern and contemporary, no doubt, but this classic vintage plays up its winning assets: the intensity of Syrah and the generosity of Tuscany. It is very nicely done.

The 2015 Cortona Syrah Cuculaia is a rich and darkly concentrated expression of the Rh?ne grape. Plush and softly textured layers unfold to blackberry, dark plum, charred meat, spice and tobacco. The thing that stands out most about the wine is the precision of the aromas and the seamless nature in which they fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. The personality of the wine is robust and full-bodied, but Cuculaia delivers plenty of pretty elegance as well.

Sporting a dark, inky rich color, the 2013 Cortona Syrah Cuculaia is the most extreme and hardcore of these new releases by Fabrizio Dionisio. This wine is enormously soft and rich, with bold aromatic layering that spans from black cherry to spice and cured leather. Syrah does not enjoy much visibility in Italy, but a wine like this (from a warm and sunny territory like Cortona) underlines the potential of this mighty French grape in Italy.

Careful fruit selection is behind the 2009 Cortona Cuculaia. This is a soft, rich and opulent expression of Syrah with full body appeal, dark blackberry fruit, plum and cherry liqueur. Spicy tones of cinnamon, leather and dried tobacco leaf complete the pretty set of primary aromas. Evolved tones of smoked meat and cured meat give the wine added sophistication and elegance.
