Edmunds St. John, one of the finest producers of wines made from Rhone Valley varietals planted in California, has turned out many exceptional wines over the last several years. Their 1990 Zinfandel from Napa Valley's Mt. Veeder is a stunning example of this varietal. The intensely fragrant nose of spices, pepper, and cassis fruit offers convincing evidence of just how fascinating Zinfandel's aromatic profile can be. In the mouth, this saturated, dark ruby/purple-colored wine exhibits splendid opulence of fruit, plenty of grip and structure, wonderful jammy fruit intensity, and a long, moderately tannic finish.
