The balsamic, modern and slightly international 2016 Nounat is a white produced with Chardonnay and the local Prensal grape with creamy aromas from the oak, clean and attractive. The palate is a little disappointing, though, brief and with a slightly bittersweet finish. It felt a lot fresher than the pure barrel-fermented Chardonnay.

Binigrau’s 2013 Nounat is priced slightly above the cut-off mark for this report, but there are several things about it that are absolutely remarkable, so I’m including it. First of all, it is the greatest wine I have ever tasted from the beautiful Mediterranean island of Mallorca. Secondly, it is a curious blend of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Prensal (an indigenous grape of the island) that is aged in a combination of tank, concrete eggs and Burgundy barrels. Absolutely spectacular, I tasted this beauty alongside some of the finest dry whites I had in my cellar, and it easily held its own, if not eclipsed those wines. Abundant notes of tropical fruits, crushed wet rocks, spring flowers, buttery tropical fruits and citrus are all present in this stunner as are a majestic texture and a long, dry, rich finish. This amazing Spanish white wine must be tasted to be believed. It is a credit to the brilliance of Eric Solomon. It should be consumed over the next 2-3 years. Coming from Mallorca, one of the four Balearic Islands, Binigrau’s 2012 Nounat was made from a curious blend of 60% Prensal (aged in concrete) and 40% Chardonnay (aged in Burgundy barrels). It exhibits notes of orange marmalade, citrus blossoms and oil, fresh acidity and tangerine notes in the mouth. Medium to full-bodied and intense, it tastes like a lightweight white Burgundy made in the black soils of Mallorca. Drink it over the next 2-3 years. A rare blend of equal parts Prensal and Chardonnay (aged 7 months in tank), this medium gold, slightly evolved 2010 offers up aromas of nut oil, honeyed citrus and flowers. A distinctive volcanic, earthy character runs through this fruit-driven white. While impressive, it is somewhat eccentric and esoteric. Drink it over the next several years.
