The bottle of 2001 Syrah Crane Vineyard I tasted was quite stable, dry, and well-endowed. Its deep, rustic, chewy, black fruit notes were intertwined with earth and loamy soil characteristics. Fragrant, well-made, and clean, it should drink well for 4-5 years. Who knows if the other bottles taste the same?I always hesitate to recommend Coturri wines as they seem to generate more nasty mail than nearly any other winery I review. Part of the problem is the winery’s reluctance to use any sulphur, which results in too many unstable, irregular bottles. What is admirable about the Coturris is that they farm ancient vineyards, make wines very naturally, and obtain loads of good flavors. The problem is they have traditionally bottled barrel by barrel, and the absence of any sulphur has led to wines being completely flawed by excessive amounts of volatile acidity and/or products that are essentially dessert wines because of high levels of residual sugar.Tel.
