The 2009 Red Blend Cuvee Eighty-Five Fifty-Five, essentially the second wine of the flagship Cinq Cepages, is a big, mouth-filling red laced with dark berries, savory herbs, tobacco, licorice and menthol. A rich, hearty wine, the Eighty-Five Fifty-Five is best suited for the dinner table, where the firm tannins will stand up to a rich variety of foods. In 2009, the blend is 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 20% Petit Verdot, 9% Cabernet Franc, 5% Syrah and 4% Malbec. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022.
This range from Chateau St. Jean is packed with values. Many of these wines, especially at the entry-level, are made in large enough production to be relatively easy to find. Achieving high quality at this scale is a rare skill. Longtime winemaker Margo Van Staaveren certainly seems to have the magic touch.
