The protagonist of the Castello Vicchiomaggio portfolio (certainly in terms of pricing) is the 2018 FSM. This is 100% Merlot from a vineyard site rich in clay soils. Production is limited to 1,500 bottles. You will discover layers of ripe fruit, baked plum, smoke, tobacco and tarry smoke on this full-bodied red wine. It shows gentle tannins and rich textural weight that borders on feeling somewhat flabby or soft.

From Greve in Chianti at the heart of the Tuscan wine zone, this 100% Merlot delivers a vibrant ruby color and good intensity of aromas. You’ll get plump cherry, red currants, sweet spice and nutmeg. It would make an excellent companion to roasted chicken with mushrooms and wild rice. FSM stands for “Federico Secondo Matta” and this is the first vintage of the wine.——M.L.(11/1/2009)—— 92
