Nostalgics will appreciate the packaging on this wine. The 2010 Chianti Classico Casanova Il Puro is closed with a wax seal and red capsule. It recalls some of the traditional packaging used for Chianti and Chianti Classico in the past. The content inside the bottle is anything but old fashion. This is a fresh, immediate and fruit-driven wine that shows no signs of giving up or slowing down. The 2010 vintage is excellent in Tuscany and the integrity of fruit demonstrates this.

The 2008 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Puro Vigneto Casanova is a softly layered and intense wine with delicate notes of forest floor, bramble, wild cherry and dried mint. If offers a fine point of acidity with polished tannins. The complexity is impressive. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022. Castello di Volpaia is one of the banner estates of the Radda in Chianti subzone of Chianti Classico in Siena province. It is managed by the Mascheroni Stianti family: Giovannella, Carlo, Nicolo and Federica. Thanks to high-elevation vineyards, Volpaia’s wines are celebrated for their freshness and finesse. The 2007 Chianti Classico Casanova Il Puro wraps around the palate with layers of dark red fruit, spices and licorice. It shows the richness of the vintage, but also possesses tons of tannic structure. There isn’t a whole lot of vintage 2007 sexiness here, but there is plenty of power and intensity, not to mention massive tannins. The 2006 Chianti Classico Casanova Il Puro is a single-vineyard wine from the Casanova vineyard. I don’t think Volpaia has really tuned this wine in just yet. The Puro is dominated by wild, gamey notes and excessive toast from the 100% new French oak barrels, both of which detract considerably from the impressively, rich fruit. The Puro remains a work in progress. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016. Volpaia is one of those estates that can only exist in Tuscany. This medieval hamlet is worth a visit from a cultural and historical perspective alone. The wines can be excellent but are also inconsistent. In recent years, the Stianti family has expanded their production with holdings in Maremma. Those wines are still clearly works in progress. Call me a purist, but I would rather see them focus on making the wines from Volpaia great first. The potential is clearly there, it just needs to be realized.
