Castello di Farnetella's 2009 Nero di Nubi is a pure expression of Pinot Noir from high altitude vineyards (from 480 to 550 meters above sea level). That altitude brings aromas of tight berry and blue flower in beautiful contrast to warmer tones of warm earth and rose that are distinctive of wines from sun-drenched Tuscany. Nero di Nubi is made in very small production numbers (from 3 to 4,000 bottles) but it is worth seeking out especially if you are a fan of this grape variety.

This is a beautifully aged expression of Pinot Nero from Tuscany. The Castello di Farnetella 2008 Nero di Nubi has had ample time to relax and soften over the years. The wine is delicate and pure with small berry aromas of dried raspberry and cassis. There is a pretty floral component as well and the wine ends with evolved tones of licorice, tar and anise seed. The tannins have completely integrated and show a satin-like, almost glossy smoothness.

Castello di Farnetella belongs to the same family which owns Felsina in Chianti Classico, and the direction and winemaking are identical as well – Giuseppe Mazzocolin for the former, Franco Bernabei for the latter. Pinot Nero is planted in the highest vineyards, but the 2000 Nero di Nubi indicates that even at over 500 meters of altitude the heat of the vintage was felt. Medium ruby-garnet in color, the wine features authentic Pinot varietal notes of strawberry and raspberry fruit, mint, and game, but the perceptible acidity and tannins indicate that ripening was not altogether ideal. The 1993 Nero di Nubi will remind few tasters of Pinot Noir, but it is an attractive, spicy wine with a strong nuances of new oak, soft, dark fruit characteristics, plenty of spice and vanillin, and a medium-bodied, supple finish with no tannin or astringency.
