The Cantina Tramin 2020 Alto Adige Pinot Grigio Unterebner hits its marks, thanks to great freshness and balance. This is a more elaborate expression of Pinot Grigio that shows soft apple, quince, dried herb and crushed stone. This lean-bodied white embodies mountain freshness in a bottle. It ages in large oak casks for 11 months, and 30,000 bottles were released.

Here is a wonderful white to enjoy with a summer lunch of lobster rolls by the oceanside. The bouquet of the 2019 Alto Adige Pinot Grigio Unterebner veers toward yellow and stone fruits, with a little more creaminess and texture at the back to separate it from a standard Pinot Grigio. Aged for 11 months in botte grande and tonneaux, this expression gives you much more softly textured peach and pear than you might have expected. Some 20,000 bottles were made.

The 2018 Alto Adige Pinot Grigio Unterebner ages in tonneaux and botte grande for 11 months. This is a luminous, fragrant and complete expression of the grape. The wine pushes the limits of the otherwise informal and approachable Pinot Grigio grape, offering pedigree and sophistication. Back in 1989, two wines were selected to showcase the potential of Cantina Tramin. Those were the Alto Adige Gewürztraminer Nussbaumer and this wine. Both represented a perfect marriage of grape and territory. Fast forward to today, and this wine remains at the forefront of the winery's portfolio. This vintage awards aromas of pear, peach and Golden Delicious apple. Some 30,000 bottles were made.

The 2017 Alto Adige Pinot Grigio Unterebner is a delineated and crisp white wine that offers fragrant layers of honeysuckle, cantaloupe melon and Golden Delicious apple. Those strong fruit signatures are very heavy in the hot 2017 vintage that also delivers a bit more concentration and general richness. This is a lean-bodied white with enough depth and complexity to pair with shellfish or crab cakes with cilantro dressing. Some 27,000 bottles were made.

The 2016 Alto Adige Pinot Grigio Unterebner shows a rich constitution with ripe fruit, apricot and lemon zest. This vintage is a bit thick or waxy on the finish, but it also delivers the bright acidity needed to keep the palate refreshed. Grapes are harvested from a cool growing spot with limestone soils (and dark volcanic porphyry stone) at 450 meters above sea level. Some 29,000 bottles were made.
