This is wonderfully fragrant, lush, plush and enveloping—it almost suffocates you with aromas of fruit and barrel and nicely-rendered spice. The fruit is pure and ripe, but the acids are preserved and the tannins are ripe, though still a bit chewy. ——P.G.(3/1/2007)—— 92

The winery’s selection of its best barrels, excluding Cabernet Sauvignon. This is 48% Ciel Cab Franc, 48% Tapteil Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot. Firm and laden with the coffee and espresso scents of Cab Franc. Smoke, liqueur, cherries and tobacco leaf scents lead into a plummy, yummy, big and broad-shouldered wine that finishes with butterscotchy barrel flavors. ——P.G.(12/15/2005)—— 90

Everything fits together beautifully in this “Right Bank-styled” Bordeaux blend, a mix of Cabernet Franc (45%), Merlot (45%) and Petit Verdot (10%) from Red Mountain vineyards. Scents of clove, star anise, cardamom and mushroom wrap around ripe fruits; there is an elegance that belies the high (14.9%) alcohol.
