The fruit-driven 2001 Cabernet/Merlot spent 10 months in French oak prior to bottling. It reveals lovely ripeness in addition to straightforward, herb-tinged, black currant flavors with hints of licorice and coffee in the background. It will drink well for 2-3 years. The Buckeley wines are unoaked or minimally oaked offerings designed to offer fruit over wood and make-up. A reasonably good value is the 1999 Cabernet/Merlot (82% of the former and 18% of the latter). A touch of herbs makes an appearance in this dark ruby/purple-colored wine's aromatics along with licorice, red currants, and cedar.
