A wine I had not encountered for a while, the 2010 Tempranillo Reserva showed lots of roasted coffee aromas over the core of ripe fruit with plenty of spices and an earthy touch. The palate is full-bodied with some fine, chalky tannins that provide for a slightly drying finish. This is a modern, ripe and extracted XL Tempranillo, very good in its style. 42,000 bottles produced.

The 2006 Tempranillo Reserva has a classical bouquet of dried flowers and red fruits, and a palate with a slightly drying finish, a common feature in many 2006 reds. There is fantastic fruit here, but I feel the vintage marked the wines, which didn’t fully absorb the effect of the elevage (18 months in barrel). You’ll need a powerful stew or something like that to compensate for the tannins in the wine. Drink 2014-2018. Amaren is the sister winery of Luis Canas, born in 1995 as a brand, and in 2009 as a separate winery, where a more modern/premium line of wines from the Canas family is produced. The 2005 Tempranillo Reserva is sourced from vines in excess of sixty-years of age and is matured in new French oak for 18 months. It has a rather broody, charred bouquet that is well-defined, but missing a little charm. The palate is full-bodied with chewy, sinewy tannins and dense black, licorice-tinged fruit on the tannic finish. This needs another 2-3 years bottle age mellow. Drink 2014-2019. Until 1995, Amaren was the premium range belonging to Bodegas Luis Canas, and it is now overseen by winemaker Fidel Fernandez Gomez. Half the vines in his vineyards are over the age of sixty years.
