The 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon State Lane Vineyard reveals the same silky tannins found in the 1995. This vintage tended to produce harder, more tannic and rustic wines, but that is not the case with this cuvee. The wine possesses plenty of sweet, jammy, plum and black currant fruit, cigar box and spice aromas, some cedar, and a silky, layered, lush, medium to full-bodied personality. It can be drunk during its first 15-18 years of life. The State Lane Vineyard is situated on extremely rocky soil in the Yountville area. The single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons are part of what Beringer calls their "Vineyard Collection." Produced in 200 case lots, readers expecting to find them sitting on a shelf in their local retail shops will be disappointed, as they are destined to be sold via Beringer's mailing list, or directly from the winery. Because of the limited quantities available, my notes on these wines are intentionally abbreviated.Release date, 4/01.Tel. (707) 963-7115; Fax (707) 963-1735
