Ballentine is better known for well-crafted Bordeaux reds and Zinfandel, but they also bring that claret-like sensibility to Syrah. This single-vineyard ’04 from St. Helena is lush and soft and likeable. It shows deep flavors of blackberries, cassis, rose petals and violets, sweetened and complexed with toasty oak. A mix of earthy, leathery flavors woven together with funky currant and blackberry fruit. Needs time to soften the rather rustic, earthy tannins. Best from 2004 through 2009. 750 cases made. -JL

Very smooth and velvety texture. The tongue feels good as the dark stone fruit and peppery flavors spread over the palate like a soft blanket.
