The 2008 Zephyr is gorgeous. This Mourvedre based red explodes on the palate with masses of dark fruit, grilled herbs, smoke and tar. The tannins are firm yet well-balanced. Hints of spices, leather and incense lend an exotic quality to the virile finish. This is another terrific showing from Audelssa. In 2008 the blend is 85% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 4% Grenache and 1% Viognier. The wine was aged in neutral French oak barrels. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018. Tel. (707) 933-8514; www.audelssa.com

A blend of 37% Grenache, 33% Syrah, 29% Mourvedre, and 1% Viognier, the 2007 Zephyr is reminiscent of a French-styled Cotes du Rhone made in California. Seductive notes of kirsch liqueur, pepper, spice box, roasted Provencal herbs, and abundant fruit cascade over the palate in this medium-bodied, luscious, complex red. It will not make old bones, but for drinking over the next 3-5 years, it is a delicious wine. I have been impressed with Audelssa’s wines since their first vintage debuted less than a decade ago. All the fruit comes primarily from the steep, western slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains, and the winery is equally talented whether it’s turning out Bordeaux varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, or unleashing some complex, delicious Rhone Rangers.Tel. The deep plum/ruby-tinged 2005 Zephyr Mountain Terraces Vineyard (a blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre) offers up smoky, black cherry, black currant, meat juice, pepper, and spice aromas, zesty acidity, medium to full body, and beautiful density, purity, and character. The GSM blend, the 2003 Zephyr, exhibits scents of plums, cherries, figs, roasted meats, and confit of duck. Silky tannin, an attractive perfume, and good intensity, elegance, and finesse suggest it should be drunk over the next 4-5 years. This is very seductive stuff! Tel. (707) 996-1790
