The 1991 Chateauneuf du Pape is a major success for what was a dreadful vintage for Chateauneuf du Pape, comparable to such notoriously bad years as 1984 and 1975. To prove he is capable of dealing with the worst weather conditions possible, Bonneau opened a bottle of 1975 from his private stock. It unquestionably merited a 90 point score. Well-placed vineyards, low yields, and totally natural wine-making do indeed account for much of this estate's success. The 1991 displays a surprisingly intense color, a rich, leathery, meaty, herb, and black-cherry-scented nose, alcoholic, chewy flavors, and considerable body and depth. This amazing wine is the finest 1991 produced in Chateauneuf du Pape.
