The 1991 Romanee St.-Vivant displays that elusive, Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, decadent, meaty, overripe, black-cherry and plum-scented bouquet intertwined with aromas of Asian spices and smoked game. Deep, fat, and rich, with layers of flavor, this magnificent wine can be drunk now, yet it will keep for up to a decade.
Arnoux, the perennial over-cropper, saw nature cut back his yields to under 35 hectoliters per hectare, his smallest yields since 1978. The results are wines that are as stunning and opulent as his fine 1990s. These 1991s must be tasted to be believed. Do not avoid them because you lack confidence in the vintage. These are seductive, complex red burgundies. They are among the superstars of the vintage.
