Guigal's white Hermitage is rarely that striking when young. It is fun to taste from cask, but once it is bottled, the attractive aromas of roasted nuts, honey, peaches and flowers seem to go undercover. The 1990 white Hermitage is a full-bodied, authoritatively rich wine that has managed to retain some of its flowery, honeyed, peach-scented nose. With some subtle oak in the background, this firm, concentrated, chewy-textured wine can be drunk now, but promises to benefit from 4-5 years of cellaring. It will keep for 10-15 years. One of the most powerful and heady white Hermitages Guigal has produced, it may turn out to be as compelling as his 1988 and 1979.
