The 1958 Reserva would have spent 48 months in American oak. It has an exquisite bouquet endowed with subtle strawberry leaf, dried pressed flowers, sandalwood and balsam aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with elegant tannins, fine weight and harmony, struck through with crisp, life-affirming acidity and hints of dried leaves and Bordeaux-like austerity towards the finish. This is a lovely mature Rioja, but on this occasion, it was surpassed by the 1956 Reserva.
These wines can crop up at auction and on top restaurant lists since the estate has comparatively healthy reserves.
