The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Clos du Roi is 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah aged in foudres (Grenache) and demi-muids (Syrah). Its attractive deep ruby/purple color is followed by aromas of sweet kirsch and blacker fruits, licorice and lavender. Full-bodied, elegant, robust, pure and intense, it should drink nicely for 10-15 years.
No 2011s were presented by this historic, yet somewhat under-the-radar estate. Founded in the 14th century, today Chateau Gigognan owns nearly 75 acres in Chateauneuf du Pape, almost all of it in the southern half of the appellation. Domaine Trevallon’s well-known proprietor, Eloi Durbach, is the consultant.
