The 1989 regular cuvee of Hermitage displayed significant tannin and a backward, closed style. However, it had just been bottled when I tasted it and may have been slightly shocked, although Sorrel does bottle without filtration. Black/ruby in color, with a reticent but blossoming bouquet of plums, hickory wood, coffee, chocolate, and cassis, in the mouth the tannins have the upper hand at the moment, but there is no doubting its weight, richness, and layers of concentration. Anticipated maturity: 1998-2010. Last tasted 6/96.
