The 1996 Merlot tasted better in mid-July than it did at the winery nine months earlier. A blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, it boasts a dense purple color, as well as a beautiful nose of black fruits, smoke, herbs, and underbrush. Thick and full-bodied, with terrific fruit, purity, and extraction, this is a deeper, richer, more complete wine than I originally predicted. It should age well for 10-12 years.
