The 1999 Rioja Coleccion Privada (an unfiltered, 100% Tempranillo wine made from tiny yields of 1.3 tons of fruit per acre) was aged 19 months in both American and French oak. Sadly, there are only 250 cases available for the United States. The wine's flavors grow by increments in the glass, improving dramatically with 15 minutes of airing. A deep ruby color is followed by a spicy, herb, berry, graphite, and licorice-scented bouquet. This rich, medium-bodied, elegant, well-balanced Rioja is not a blockbuster, but expands in flavor and nuances as it crosses the palate. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.
