A new offering, the light gold-colored 1997 Chardonnay La Carriere (only 125 cases produced), comes from a hillside situated below the Belle Cote Vineyard. It is planted with Dijon Burgundy Chardonnay clones, in addition to the Hyde clone. Aged in 30% new oak, this offering reveals a distinctive mineral character not dissimilar from certain Corton-Charlemagnes. Liquid stone-like flavors are pronounced in the mouth, in addition to citrus and subtle oak notes. This distinctive, high-toned, terroir-driven, concentrated wine is more subtle than some of Peter Michael's efforts. It should drink well for 3-4 years.
The 1997's are leesy, complex, full-bodied, unfiltered Chardonnays. The wines had been bottled in August, yet were singing at high volume when I tasted it in September.
This brilliantly run winery continues to push the quality of their wines to even more remarkable heights.
