This modern-styled Italian red is produced from Aglianico, a grape that should begin receiving more attention given the level of quality evident in my tastings over the last few years. A serious varietal, it may not provide the complexity of such great international grapes as Pinot Noir, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Tempranillo, and Nebbiolo, but it is comparable to the quality of Sangiovese, Mourvedre, and Zinfandel. The wine is aged for twelve months in new oak, resulting in a serious, dense purple-colored effort with tell-tale notes of melted asphalt intermixed with earthy black cherry and currant fruit. The aging potential is unknown, but I would recommend drinking it during its exuberant youth, over the next 5-6 years.Importer: Vinifera Imports, Ronkonkoma, NY; tel. (516) 467-5907
