Looking at the traditional cuvee, the 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape is still ruby/opaque in color, with hints of purple at the center. A blend of 80% Grenache and 10% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre that was mostly destemmed and brought up in 80% foudre and 20% in barrels (one-third of which were new), it yields gorgeous notes of cassis, sweet blackberries, wild herbs, licorice and subtle garrigue on the nose. This is followed by a pure, elegant and full-bodied Chateauneuf du Pape that has fabulous fruit and texture, good freshness and a clean finish. I’d be thrilled to have a case in the cellar. Drink it over the coming 4-5 years.
